Diatomites
15 July 2025

Diatomite is a sedimentary rock composed of the fossilized remains of the skeletons of single-celled aquatic algae known as “diatoms”.

To purify products in their liquid form (wine, beer, olive oil and oils in general) by removing suspended particles responsible for turbidity, mechanical filtration is the ideal solution. From this perspective, diatomaceous earth, or diatomite, is an excellent solution. A unique form of silica, it has an elaborate honeycomb structure, dotted with thousands of tiny holes ranging in diameter from a few micrometers to values below a micrometer. No other source of silica, whether mined or artificially produced, has or can reproduce a similar structure.

One of the advantages of using diatoms is that their main constituent, silica, is inert and therefore does not chemically affect the fluids being filtered.

For the Portuguese industrial market, Salmon represents a long-standing partnership in this segment, which began in the 1970s with the American company Manville and continues today with Imerys. Today, Imerys is one of the most important manufacturers of filtration adjuvants in the international market. Imerys’ diatomaceous earth line is called Celite, and these products have a wide range of applications, from beer filtration for yeast removal (Celite Hyflo, Celite Standard Supecel, and Filtercel) to cooking oil filtration (Celite 560 for olive oil and Celite 545 for sunflower, soybean, and rapeseed oil).
